Sheila- The Photographer

The name is Sheila. I am a Christian, daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, YaYa, and a senior portrait photographer in Houston. My God, my family, and photography are my life.

I am crazy about coffee…. the taste, color, and aroma…. especially with my natural bliss sweet cream.  YUM! I love a good pair of jeans, boots of all kinds, high heels, leggings, and dangly earrings…. but not all at the same time. I love antiques and the stories they hold. I am a crafter at heart…I get it from my mom and my beautiful daughter got it from me. I love hot pink and zebra print, polka dots, curly-qs, and damask! Above all…I adore my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Without him, I would be nothing. I give him all the praise and glory for the many blessings and talents he has given me.

Growing up I was always very shy. I am not talking a little shy either.  It was a crippling shyness. When I was in high school it kept me from doing a lot of things. I never tried out for sports, drama club, or anything that would place me in the public eye. I would rather die than go out for cheerleaders or the dance teams. My shyness not only held me back in extracurricular wise it held me back socially too. Despite being friends with the popular crowd I was never one to be invited to parties, dances, etc. I was “just Sheila” …. the quiet reserved girl in the group.  This left me feeling quite unimportant, lonesome, and, yes, even ugly. Although looks had absolutely nothing to do with my shyness it is funny how those things can mess with your head.

As I have grown, I have come to realize how crippled I was by the haunts in my mind…., especially the “looks” part. Not being popular made me feel unattractive as well. I have come to understand with age that it just was not true. I never let people get to know me well enough to see what beauty I was or could be. You see beauty is not about looks. It is about what is on the inside. I have plenty of regrets as I look back now. I wish I had placed more value on myself. All girls deserve to feel beautiful. All girls deserve to have that beauty within shine through to the outside.

That is why I became a senior portrait photographer. I want every girl that comes to me for portraits to experience beauty inside and out. I want to know everything about them…hopes, dreams, you name it. I think Audrey Hepburn said it best. “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.”
